I am a painter and printmaker, painting ‘en plein air’ since growing up in Sidney, BC. I have been painting with the Peninsula Plein Air Painters since 1997 both in oils and watercolours. My aim, using watercolours, is to capture the essence of familiar local scenes.
A Brief Biography
Avis majored in Art Education for teaching, completing a BEd. ’75, BFA ’79, MEd. ’82. This was followed by Metchosin Summer School for the Arts, painting with Flemming Jorgensen, creating Japanese woodcuts with Noboru Sawai, Self Portraiture with Leslie Poole and colour theory with Xane St. Philip.
In 1992 she was juried into the Emma Lake Artists’ Workshop and in 2003 into a Residency in Italy with the International School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture.
On her travels in Greece, Spain, Italy, France, Holland, USA & across Canada, Avis’s sketchbooks are the the genesis of many linocuts, drawings and paintings. These sketchbooks also have been reproduced for use as storybooks, which are little jewel treasures of her travels.
For many years Avis painted ‘en plein air’ in Europe & the UK and exhibited a selection of these paintings annually at Winchester Galleries, Victoria. Avis has continued to show her work in local exhibits and venues, including, Victoria Arts Council, Groundbreakers Printmakers, Victoria Sketch Club and the Victoria Art Gallery.
Location 2 : Coast Capital Savings, 3750 Shelbourne Street, Victoria, BC

After a long successful and rewarding career in design, I turned my attention to painting. At first I tried water based oils and acrylics but gradually went to conventional oil paint. As a designer, of course, I had spent my whole career drawing, drafting, and painting in watercolours but did not have experience with oil paint.
I eventually started taking cast drawing classes with Noah Layne where I learned many more skills. Cast
drawing led to still life painting, which I really enjoy. I love seeing articles in my “set up” come to life under my brush. I also love to experiment with colour and texture in abstract painting, thus the variety in my styles of art.
I bring ideas from my travels to my studio as well, and am now working on a series of paintings from the South of France where I went to visit Stefaan Eykmans (famed still life painter). This is a fresh new direction for me to explore and one that I hope will take me back there.
