I grew up in Victoria, and lived all over Canada and southern England, but was regularly drawn back to the family acreage in Deep Cove. My mother, Susan Lapham, was a founding member of SPAC, and a very active painter and potter.
As a youngster I loved to paint and draw, but in maturity discovered that I tended to make “mud” with paint and gave it up. In retirement I was introduced to quilting, which intrigued me, but I found the block making process repetitive, and not my thing. I happened on a book by Ruth McDowell, a master fabric artist, and was immediately “hooked”. My teachers reside in my bookcase shelves, on my iPad, and amongst all my quilting artsy friends. I am thrilled to discover that fiber art is now so popular and accepted in art shows.
Since arriving in Sidney, from Calgary via Nanaimo, I have joined SPAC and am looking forward to participating in ArtSea.
