Exhibition Details:
Salt Spring Island artist Susan Haigh has been enthralled by flowers all her life. Her paintings are full of the joy to be found in a flower. Throughout her career, roses have often called out to be painted. This show brings together a collection of her rose paintings, large and small, done over the last 20 years. As a child of Salt Spring Island, the natural world was Susan Haigh’s playground. She started her painting career with flowers as her main subject but it took a while before she dared to tackle the beautiful Rose. Fascinated by wild flowers, the spectrum of her choice of flower subjects was broad. Nevertheless, in the last 20 years she has done over 40 paintings, large and small featuring roses. Of these 24 remain, many having been done in the Covid confused years when stock piling new paintings was the best option. The rose is a flower which evokes emotional responses, activating our hearts with its beauty and scintillating scents. For many people with gardens, the collection of new varieties of roses is a lifelong obsession and although its thorns can be treacherous for those who try to limit its growth, we forgive it this small digression. Susan Haigh’s show ‘For the Love of Roses’ running from July 18 to 24, is sure to delight. An opening celebration with refreshments is planned for July 18, 4:30 until 6:30. |
